Kenya and Uganda: English is an official language and widely spoken in cities, hotels, restaurants, and by anyone working in tourism. You'll have no problem. Tanzania: Swahili is dominant and English is less universal outside tourist areas — learn a few Swahili words and people will love you for it.

Habari (hello/how are you) and Asante (thank you) in Swahili go a very long way in Tanzania and Kenya both.
