FIFA World Cup 2030 · Fez

FezThe imperial city. World Cup 2030.

Fez is the cultural and spiritual capital of Morocco — a medieval city almost entirely unchanged since the 14th century. Hosting FIFA 2030 group stage matches in a city where the world's oldest university is still in session is an experience no other World Cup has offered.

The stadium

Stade de Fès

StadiumStade de Fès
Capacity~45,000 (post-expansion)
Getting thereStadium is approximately 5km from Bab Boujloud (main Medina gate). Petit taxis are cheap and direct. Allow 20–30 minutes on matchday.

Stade de Fès

Expanded and modernised for FIFA 2030. The stadium sits on the edge of the modern Ville Nouvelle district — a contrast to the ancient Medina just a few kilometres away. Expected to host group stage matches.

Where to stay

Best areas for World Cup fans

Fès el-Bali (Old Medina)

Best experience

UNESCO World Heritage Site. Riad stays here are extraordinary — but allow extra time to find your accommodation in the labyrinthine streets.

Fès el-Jdid (New Medina)

Historic

Mellah (Jewish quarter) and royal palace adjacent. More navigable than el-Bali, still historic.

Ville Nouvelle

Practical

French-built modern district. International hotels, restaurants, easier for first-timers. Near the stadium.

Atlas Fes Hotel area

Comfortable

Mid-range international hotels near the Ville Nouvelle. Good value, pool, easy taxi access.

Getting around

Transport

The old Medina is car-free — donkeys still carry goods through the narrow lanes. Petit taxis (small red Mercedes) are everywhere in the Ville Nouvelle and get you between the Medina and stadium. Grands taxis (larger shared vehicles) connect to Casablanca (3.5 hours) and other cities.

Arriving

Getting here

Fès–Saïss Airport (FEZ). Direct flights from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. From the UK, connect via Casablanca (55 minutes on Royal Air Maroc) or via Paris. From Lagos or Accra, connect through Casablanca. Train from Casablanca takes 3.5 hours and is comfortable — a great way to move between host cities.

Food

What to eat

Fez is arguably Morocco's finest culinary city. Try: pastilla (pigeon pie with almonds and icing sugar — the dish sounds strange and tastes extraordinary), harira soup, mechoui (slow-roasted lamb). The Restaurant Dar Roumana in the Medina is exceptional. Street food around Bab Boujloud for cheap, authentic Moroccan breakfast.
