The historic walled city. Staying in a riad is the Marrakech experience. Noisy, atmospheric, extraordinary.

Comfortable

Modern district with international hotels and restaurants. More straightforward for first-timers.

Hivernage

Premium

Luxury hotel district near the Medina walls. Quieter than the Medina, upscale.

Palmeraie

Palm grove suburb north of the city. Resort hotels and riads with pools.

Getting around

Transport

The Medina is not navigable by car — it is pedestrianised and labyrinthine. Petit taxis are cheap and abundant for getting between the Medina and the stadium. Uber works in Marrakech. Calèches (horse-drawn carriages) are a tourist experience on Djemaa el-Fna.

Arriving

Getting here

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). Taxi to city centre is 15 minutes (~150 MAD). Direct flights from London Gatwick (EasyJet, Ryanair), Paris, Amsterdam, and connecting flights from Lagos via Casablanca (2.5 hours).

Food

What to eat

Djemaa el-Fna at dusk — food stalls cooking couscous, tagine, merguez and sheep heads. Le Jardin restaurant in the Medina for modern Moroccan. Nomad restaurant rooftop for views and good tagine. Café de France for mint tea watching the square.
