Bilbao Airport (BIO) has direct flights from London Heathrow (British Airways, easyJet) and connections from Madrid (40 minutes). From Africa, connect through Madrid or Barcelona. Alternatively, high-speed train from Madrid (5 hours, scenic route through the Basque mountains).
What to eat
Pintxos — Basque tapas — are world-class in Bilbao. The old town bars serve extraordinary bite-sized food: anchovies on bread, spider crab, salt cod, ibérico. The Ribera Market on the river is the best food market in Spain. Bar Victor Montes in the old town for benchmark pintxos.
