Bring both. Cards work fine at hotels, malls and larger restaurants. Cash is king for street food, markets and local transport. Withdraw local currency from ATMs on arrival. Carry small notes — vendors rarely have change for large bills.

Wise card is great for withdrawals in East Africa — low fees and good rates. Use local ATMs inside malls and withdraw what you need for 2–3 days at a time.
