You can use M-Pesa as a tourist by registering at a Safaricom shop with your passport — takes about 15 minutes. It makes life much easier as many smaller vendors don't take cards. Most major shops and restaurants also accept Visa/Mastercard.

Safaricom will set you up with a tourist SIM + M-Pesa at JKIA arrivals. Do it before you leave the airport.
