FIFA World Cup 2030 features 48 teams — the expanded format from FIFA 2026. Spain, Portugal and Morocco qualify automatically as co-hosts. The remaining 45 spots are allocated across all confederations through a qualification process running approximately 2027–2029.
Automatic qualifiers
The three main co-hosts qualify automatically: Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay also receive automatic entry as centenary match hosts — giving South America 3 confirmed spots before qualification begins.
Africa (CAF) — up to 9 spots
With 9 CAF spots available (plus Morocco as auto-qualifier), Africa has its strongest-ever World Cup allocation. Strongest contenders: Senegal (current AFCON holders), Nigeria (Super Eagles perennial qualifiers), Egypt (Mohamed Salah's generation transitioning to next), Ivory Coast (AFCON 2023 champions), Ghana, South Africa, Algeria, Cameroon, Tunisia.
Europe (UEFA) — 16 spots
Europe remains the most competitive region. France, Germany, England, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal (auto), Spain (auto), Belgium, Croatia and others will battle for 16 places. The quality of UEFA's qualifying process means several excellent teams will miss out.
South America (CONMEBOL) — 6 spots
Beyond the three centenary auto-qualifiers (Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay), CONMEBOL has 3 additional spots. Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Chile are the strongest contenders for those places.
Asia (AFC) — 8 spots
Japan, South Korea, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Qatar are the most likely qualifiers from Asia's 8 allocated spots.
What this means for trip planning
