Getting around

Transport

Tangier has a new tramway system connecting key areas. Petit taxis are cheap and abundant. Tangier Ville station connects to the Al Boraq high-speed train to Casablanca (2 hours 10 minutes) and Rabat (1 hour 15 minutes). The ferry to Spain operates from two ports: Tangier Ville (central, fast ferries to Tarifa) and Tangier Med (larger ferries to Algeciras, 45km east of the city).

Arriving

Getting here

Ibn Battuta International Airport (TNG) has direct flights from Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam and several European cities. From London, EasyJet and Ryanair operate seasonal routes. From Africa, connect through Casablanca. Alternatively — and this is the unique Tangier option — take the ferry from Tarifa, Spain (35 minutes) and then the Al Boraq train.

Food

What to eat

Tangier has an extraordinarily cosmopolitan food culture — Moorish, Spanish, French and traditional Moroccan all intersect here. Try: Kseksou (Tangier-style couscous with fish, different from southern Moroccan versions), shermoula (marinated and grilled fish), briouates (pastry stuffed with seafood or cheese). The Café Central in the Petit Socco is a Tangier institution.
