The most underrated AFCON 2027 host city. Your complete guide to where to stay, eat, and explore in Uganda's capital.
The most upscale and convenient areas for AFCON tourists. Kololo Hill has excellent international hotels, restaurants and embassies. Nakasero is the central business district — busier but well-connected. Both are within 20–30 minutes of the stadium.
Popular mid-range neighbourhood buzzing with restaurants, bars and nightlife. Very safe, walkable and a great vibe especially in the evenings. Good-value guesthouses and serviced apartments available here.
Residential neighbourhoods with a local feel and cheaper accommodation. A bit further from the centre but accessible by SafeBoda or Bolt. Popular with longer-stay visitors who want to live less like a tourist.
Airport city on Lake Victoria, 40 minutes south of Kampala. Viable base if you're flying in and out frequently. Much quieter than Kampala. Not ideal for stadium access unless you have private transfers.
A chapati rolled around a fried egg, vegetables and sometimes meat. Found everywhere for 500–2000 UGX. Best eaten fresh off the griddle from a street vendor. The name came from 'rolled eggs' — said fast enough it became Rolex.
Matoke (steamed green banana mash) is the Ugandan staple. Served with groundnut stew, beef or beans. Rich, filling and delicious. Any local restaurant will have it.
Kampala has entire streets of outdoor spots where whole pigs are roasted and served in portions with chilli sauce. A Kampala institution — don't leave without trying it.
Kampala has a strong Indian community and genuinely excellent Indian restaurants, particularly in Nakasero. The Lawns and Faze3 are reliable upscale options.
Motorcycle taxis are the fastest way to get around Kampala's gridlocked streets. SafeBoda is the app-based version — safer, with helmets provided and insurance. Download it before you arrive. Most rides within the city cost under 5,000 UGX (~$1.30).
Bolt operates in Kampala and is the main option for car-based trips, especially at night or with luggage. Avoid unknown drivers who approach you at hotels.
40km, 45–60 minutes in normal traffic. Bolt from the airport costs around 40,000–60,000 UGX. Our packages include airport transfers.
Traffic in Kampala on match days will be severe. SafeBoda genuinely weaves through traffic where cars are stuck. Allow 2+ hours to reach the stadium.
Kampala is generally safe for tourists especially in Kololo, Nakasero and Kisementi. Standard urban precautions apply. AFCON will bring significant security presence throughout the city.
Malaria is present — take prophylaxis, use DEET at dusk/dawn. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Uganda and may be checked at the airport. Drink bottled water only.
Avoid Owino Market (the main downtown market) with valuables. Don't photograph government buildings, military installations or the airport.
Uganda Police: 999 or 112. International Hospital Kampala: +256 31 220 0400. Nakasero Hospital: +256 41 423 8000.
White-water rafting on the Nile, bungee jumping, kayaking and the ceremonial source of the world's longest river. A fantastic day trip or overnight. Adrenaline levels are high here year-round.
Mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Permits cost $800 but the hour with the gorillas is genuinely unforgettable. Requires 2 nights minimum. Book permits through Uganda Wildlife Authority well in advance.
Forested islands on Lake Victoria with excellent accommodation and lake swimming. A great escape between matches.
The most powerful waterfall in the world by flow rate, where the Nile forces itself through a 7-metre gap in the rocks. Best as a 2-night trip.
AFCON matches in Kampala will be something special. Ugandans are exceptionally warm and football-mad even when their own team isn't playing. Expect noise, colour and a genuine carnival atmosphere on the streets hours before kick-off.
Kampala fan culture means pre-match drinks and food on the street near the stadium. Try the rolex, grilled pork and cold Nile Special beer before heading in.
Kabalagala and Kisementi will be buzzing after evening matches. Club Guvnor is one of the most famous nightlife spots in East Africa — expect it to be heaving on AFCON nights.
Bring cash for food and transport. Charge your phone — you'll need Bolt or SafeBoda to get back. Confirm your hotel has a 24h front desk before you go out post-match.
Our AFCON 2027 packages include flights, accommodation, match tickets and transfers — all from one place.
