FIFA World Cup 2030 · Argentina

ArgentinaThe centenary match. Buenos Aires.

Argentina hosts one of three FIFA World Cup 2030 centenary celebration matches in Buenos Aires — a historic moment marking 100 years since the first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. One match. One city. One night that football will remember.

The centenary

100 years of the World Cup

The FIFA World Cup was born in Uruguay in 1930. Thirteen nations competed. Uruguay won. One hundred years later, FIFA has honoured that history by giving three South American nations — Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay — one match each as centenary celebration fixtures ahead of the main tournament in Europe and Africa.

Argentina's centenary match in Buenos Aires is not a group stage game in the traditional sense. It is a symbolic fixture: the World Cup returning to the continent where it started, played in front of what will be one of the most emotionally charged crowds in the tournament's history.

Argentina are the current World Champions (Qatar 2022) and are expected to be one of the strongest nations at FIFA 2030. A centenary match on home soil, in front of 80,000 in Buenos Aires, will be unlike anything else in the tournament.

The city beyond the match

Estadio Monumental

River Plate's ground is the largest stadium in South America at 84,567 capacity. Located in the Núñez neighbourhood, easily accessible by Metro and bus. Expect an electric atmosphere for the centenary fixture.

Getting to Buenos Aires

Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) is the main gateway. Flights from London (~14 hours), Lagos (~12 hours via São Paulo or Addis), Nairobi (~16 hours). Many fans will combine with the European leg of their trip.

Food and culture

Buenos Aires is one of the great cities of South America. Asado (Argentine BBQ), empanadas, dulce de leche. The Recoleta neighbourhood, La Boca's Caminito, tango shows in San Telmo.

Neighbourhoods

Palermo for bars and restaurants. Recoleta for elegance and the famous cemetery. San Telmo for tango and antiques. Puerto Madero for the waterfront. La Boca for football culture.

Football culture

Buenos Aires has more professional football clubs than any other city. A visit to La Bombonera (Boca Juniors) or El Monumental on non-matchday is part of any Argentine football experience.

Combining with Spain or Morocco

Many fans will do Buenos Aires for the centenary match then fly to Spain or Morocco for the group stage. Buenos Aires → Madrid is 12 hours direct (Iberia, Air Europa). Worth the journey for a once-in-a-century occasion.

Combine South America with Europe or Morocco

The most adventurous FIFA 2030 trip starts in Buenos Aires for the centenary and continues to Casablanca, Madrid or Lisbon for the group stage. Cantravu can build this as a single package — South America leg plus European or Moroccan leg, all coordinated.
