Madagascar coach Corentin Martins has handed first call-ups to goalkeeper Zacharie Boucher and striker Roman Ferber, for qualifiers against Nigeria and Tanzania.
Madagascar coach Corentin Martins has named two debutants — goalkeeper Zacharie Boucher and striker Roman Ferber — in a 25-man squad for a genuinely tough opening assignment: away to Nigeria, then home to Tanzania just four days later.
The Barea are chasing a return to AFCON's finals having missed the previous edition, but arrive with genuine momentum after reaching the final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Nairobi last year.
Two chances for the newcomers
ESTAC Troyes goalkeeper Boucher joins Geordan Dupire and Nina Rakotoasimbola in a three-man goalkeeping group, receiving his first senior call-up with a real opportunity to establish himself during the window. Atert Bissen striker Ferber is the other newcomer, joining an attacking group that also features Hakim Abdallah, Warren Caddy, El Hadary Raheriniaina, Arnaud Randrianantenaina and Nicolas Fontaine.
Caddy's return in particular gives Martins an experienced attacking option alongside the new faces.
A demanding start
Madagascar's opener takes them to Nigeria — as tough an away fixture as exists in African qualifying — before a home meeting with Tanzania on 29 September, leaving little recovery time between the two.
Experience retained
Marco Ilaimaharitra and Rayan Raveloson anchor a six-man midfield alongside Loïc Lapoussin, Behaja Randriamalala, Andy Rakotondrajoa and Nicolas Randriamanampisoa. In defence, Andy Pelmard and the experienced Thomas Fontaine lead a ten-man group that also includes Mathieu Acapandié, Ehsan Kari, Sandro Tremoulet, Rado Rabemanantsoa, Ryan Ponti, Morgan Jean Pierre, Bono Rabearivelo and Tony Randriamanampisoa.
