FIFA World Cup 2030 will feature 48 teams — the expanded format introduced for FIFA 2026. This is significantly more than the 32 teams at Qatar 2022 and gives every confederation more places.

The 48-team format
48 teams play in 12 groups of four. The top two from each group advance, plus eight best third-placed teams — giving 32 teams in the round of 32. From there it is single-match elimination to the final.
With 48 teams, there are significantly more group stage matches: 104 total matches across the tournament (versus 64 at Qatar 2022).
How many spots does each confederation get?
FIFA has not yet confirmed the final allocation for 2030, but based on the 2026 allocation as a reference:
- Europe (UEFA): 16 spots
- Africa (CAF): 9 spots
- South America (CONMEBOL): 6 spots + 3 co-host automatic qualifications
- Asia (AFC): 8 spots
- North/Central America (CONCACAF): 6 spots
- Oceania (OFC): 1 spot
- Host nations: Spain, Portugal and Morocco qualify automatically
Note on host nation qualification: Morocco qualifies automatically as a co-host. This may affect CAF's available spots — the final number will be confirmed by FIFA.
Africa's contenders for FIFA 2030
With 9 spots available (approximately), CAF qualification is competitive. The strongest contenders based on current form:
Morocco — automatically qualified as host. The Atlas Lions reached the 2022 World Cup semi-final and are arguably Africa's strongest team. Will be one of the most watched teams in the tournament on home soil.
Senegal — Africa's top-ranked team for much of the past five years. Reigning AFCON champions (2022). Sadio Mané's era is transitioning but the generation behind him (Ismaïla Sarr, Iliman Ndiaye) is strong.
Nigeria — the Super Eagles are perennial qualifiers and have significant quality across all positions. One of the tournament's most watched teams globally due to Nigerian diaspora.
Egypt — Mohamed Salah's era is ending but Egyptian football runs deep. Multiple AFCON titles, strong domestic league infrastructure.
Ivory Coast — AFCON 2023 champions on home soil. A generation of quality players with European experience.
South Africa — Bafana Bafana have rebuilt competitively and are realistic 2030 contenders. The prospect of the South African national team at a World Cup hosted in part by Morocco would be extraordinary.
Ghana — The Black Stars have World Cup history (2010 quarter-final) and continue to produce quality players. A realistic qualifier.
Algeria — Competitive across CAF and have qualified for recent tournaments. Strong diaspora following in Europe, particularly France.
Cameroon — The Indomitable Lions are perennial contenders with significant European-based player depth.
When does qualification start?
FIFA 2030 qualification for CAF nations will run approximately 2027–2029 in a group + playoff format, mirroring the FIFA 2026 qualification structure. Exact dates and group draws will be confirmed by FIFA and CAF.
The draw for the qualification groups is expected to take place in 2026–2027.
Why qualification matters for travel planning
The fixture schedule for FIFA 2030 — which teams are in which groups, which cities host which matches — will only be known after qualification is complete and the final draw is made (approximately 12–18 months before the tournament, so 2028–2029).
