The 10 East African dishes every AFCON 2027 visitor should try. From Kenyan nyama choma to Tanzanian pilau to Ugandan rolex — a food lover's checklist for the tournament.

AFCON 2027 gives you access to three distinct food cultures. Here are the 10 dishes that should be on your list before you fly home.

1. Nyama Choma (Kenya & Tanzania)

Slow-roasted goat or beef over charcoal. Salted, simple, perfect. Order by the half kilo with kachumbari (fresh tomato and onion salsa) and a cold Tusker beer. This is the dish that Kenyan matches are built around — in restaurants, in gardens, and at street stalls.

Where: Any nyama choma spot in Nairobi. Look for the outdoor charcoal grills and the smell.

2. Rolex (Uganda)

Uganda's masterpiece of street food. A chapati (thin flatbread) cooked until slightly crispy, then wrapped around scrambled eggs, shredded cabbage, tomatoes, and optional meat. The name comes from "rolled eggs." It costs almost nothing. It is one of the most satisfying things you can eat at any hour.

Where: Any roadside rolex stall in Kampala. The best ones have been at the same corner for years.

3. Pilau Rice (Tanzania & Kenya)

Rice slow-cooked in a broth of whole spices — cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, black pepper. Deep flavour, fragrant, often served at celebrations and special occasions. The Zanzibar version is particularly good. Different from Indian biryani despite the shared spice heritage.

Where: Any local restaurant in Dar es Salaam. Ask specifically for pilau rather than wali (plain rice).

4. Ugali + Sukuma Wiki (Kenya & Tanzania)

The daily meal. Dense maize flour cake (ugali) served alongside braised collard greens (sukuma wiki). Not glamorous but fundamental — this is what people across both countries eat. The contrast of the starchy ugali against the slightly bitter, savoury greens is satisfying in a way that's hard to explain.

Where: Any local canteen in Kenya or Tanzania. Will cost under $2.

5. Samaki wa Kupaka (Coastal Tanzania & Kenya)

Whole fish marinated in coconut milk, garlic, and chilli, then grilled over charcoal. The coconut marinade caramelises slightly on the grill and creates something genuinely special. Best eaten near the ocean, obviously.

Where: Coastal restaurants in Dar es Salaam, especially in Masaki and Kigamboni.

6. Matoke (Uganda)

Green cooking bananas, steamed until soft, then mashed and served with groundnut sauce or beef stew. The texture is something between mashed potato and polenta. Mild, comforting, and inseparably Ugandan. Widely misunderstood by first-time visitors who expect sweetness.

Where: Everywhere in Kampala. Any local restaurant menu.

7. Zanzibar Mix / Urojo (Tanzania)

A complex street soup from Zanzibar — a thin tamarind and coconut broth containing potatoes, cassava, bhajia fritters, and various accompaniments. Topped with chilli and lime. Unlike anything else you've ever eaten. Worth going to Zanzibar for alone.

Where: Street stalls in Zanzibar Stone Town.

8. Mutura (Kenya)

Kenyan blood sausage — offal and spiced meat stuffed into intestine casing, then grilled. This is not for the faint-hearted but for adventurous eaters it's one of Nairobi's great street food experiences. Usually sold from charcoal grills in markets late at night.

Where: Gikomba market area in Nairobi, or from night market vendors in the CBD.

9. Mandazi (All Three Countries)

Triangular or round fried dough, lightly sweetened with coconut and cardamom. The East African doughnut but lighter and less sweet. Eaten for breakfast with chai ya tangawizi (ginger tea) everywhere. One of the great simple pleasures.

Where: Everywhere. Every morning. This is not a dish you find — it finds you.

10. Groundnut Stew / Enva (Uganda)

Chicken or beef slow-cooked in a sauce made from ground peanuts, tomatoes, and onion. Rich, warming, deeply flavoured. Central to Ugandan home cooking and one of the region's most satisfying dishes.

Where: Any local Ugandan restaurant. Ask for "groundnut stew" — it will be understood.
