Where to eat well in all three AFCON 2027 host cities. The best restaurants in Nairobi, Kampala, and Dar es Salaam — from local favourites to special occasion dining.

East Africa has better food than most first-time visitors expect. Here's where to find it — from local joints to special occasion tables.

Nairobi

Nairobi's food scene has exploded in the last decade. The city sits at a crossroads of East African, Indian, and international influence — and the cooking reflects it.

For nyama choma (grilled meat)

Carnivore Restaurant is the classic tourist answer but it's classic for a reason — the rotisserie approach to game and domestic meats is genuinely excellent and has been for 40 years. Go once. For something more local, Simmers on Thika Road is where Nairobi residents actually go for proper nyama choma with ugali and sukuma wiki.

For Swahili and coastal food

Swahili Plate in Westlands is widely regarded as the best coastal Swahili food in the city. The coconut-based stews, pilau rice, and fresh seafood transport you to Mombasa. Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant is worth knowing about — it's in Mombasa itself but if you're extending your trip to the coast, book immediately.

For a special evening

Lord Erroll Restaurant in Runda is Nairobi's most acclaimed fine dining experience — European cooking with Kenyan produce in a beautiful colonial-era setting. Reserve well ahead.

For breakfast and coffee

Artcaffe has multiple locations and is the go-to for reliable breakfast, good coffee, and fast wifi. Java House is the alternative with equally reliable service across the city.

Kampala

Kampala's food is defined by rolex (not the watch), matoke, and groundnut stew — but the city has grown a genuine restaurant culture in recent years.

For local food done properly

Endiro Coffee started as a coffee shop but its food menu has grown into a proper restaurant. The matoke with groundnut stew is excellent. Multiple locations, all reliable.

Café Javas (the Ugandan equivalent of Java House) is a safe, reliable, and good-value option across the city. The rolex wrap is better than it has any right to be.

For something more elevated

The Lawns at Speke Hotel is Kampala's most established fine dining setting — formal without being stiff, and the service is attentive. Good for a pre-match dinner with a group.

Xclusive Restaurant in Kololo offers a terrace overlooking the city and a menu that mixes continental and local dishes competently.

Street food: the real story

The rolex — a chapati rolled around eggs, vegetables, and sometimes meat — is Uganda's great contribution to street food culture. You will find it everywhere. The best ones are from roadside stalls that have been at the same spot for years. Follow the queue of locals.

Dar es Salaam

Dar's food reflects its Swahili coast identity — fresh seafood, coconut, spice, and the influence of centuries of Indian Ocean trade.

For fresh seafood

The Waterfront in Masaki is the most consistent seafood restaurant in the city. Grilled fish, prawns, and crab from the Indian Ocean, served with rice and coastal condiments. Book ahead.

Neptune Restaurant — older and slightly more formal, but the lobster is genuinely special.

For local Swahili food

Mseto Bar and Grill in Kariakoo serves proper Swahili home cooking — biryani rice, coconut fish, and grilled meat at prices that feel almost too low. This is where residents eat.

For Indian Ocean breakfast

Mandazi (fried dough), chai ya tangawizi (ginger tea), and samosas from any street stall in the morning. Costs almost nothing. Genuinely delicious. Start every day in Dar like this.

General food tips for AFCON 2027

Drink bottled or filtered water — not because the tap water is necessarily unsafe but because traveller's stomach from unfamiliar bacteria is a real risk and not how you want to spend a match day.

Eat where locals eat. The tourist restaurant near the stadium charges 5× the local price for food of half the quality.

Dietary restrictions: Vegetarian and halal options are widely available across all three cities. Vegan requires slightly more navigation but is achievable.

Tipping: 10% is the local standard in restaurants. Rounding up is appropriate at market stalls and street food vendors.
