Lord Erroll Restaurant in Runda is Nairobi's most acclaimed fine dining experience — European cooking with Kenyan produce in a beautiful colonial-era setting. Reserve well ahead.

Artcaffe has multiple locations and is the go-to for reliable breakfast, good coffee, and fast wifi. Java House is the alternative with equally reliable service across the city.

Kampala's food is defined by rolex (not the watch), matoke, and groundnut stew — but the city has grown a genuine restaurant culture in recent years.

For local food done properly

Endiro Coffee started as a coffee shop but its food menu has grown into a proper restaurant. The matoke with groundnut stew is excellent. Multiple locations, all reliable.

Café Javas (the Ugandan equivalent of Java House) is a safe, reliable, and good-value option across the city. The rolex wrap is better than it has any right to be.

For something more elevated

The Lawns at Speke Hotel is Kampala's most established fine dining setting — formal without being stiff, and the service is attentive. Good for a pre-match dinner with a group.

Xclusive Restaurant in Kololo offers a terrace overlooking the city and a menu that mixes continental and local dishes competently.

Street food: the real story

The rolex — a chapati rolled around eggs, vegetables, and sometimes meat — is Uganda's great contribution to street food culture. You will find it everywhere. The best ones are from roadside stalls that have been at the same spot for years. Follow the queue of locals.

Neptune Restaurant — older and slightly more formal, but the lobster is genuinely special.

For local Swahili food

Mseto Bar and Grill in Kariakoo serves proper Swahili home cooking — biryani rice, coconut fish, and grilled meat at prices that feel almost too low. This is where residents eat.
